Hurricane Irene Information

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is making preparations in advance of the anticipated landfall of Hurricane Irene this weekend. Full staff will be in place to respond, and the agency’s Office of Emergency Management mobile command center will be activated.

In addition to closely monitoring changing conditions and conducting regular briefings internally, the agency is coordinating with the States of New York and New Jersey, external stakeholders and the Federal Aviation Administration, which controls air traffic. Port Authority staff also has taken numerous advance steps at its facilities.

Airports

  • John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International airports are now open to arriving flights with departures resuming on Monday, Aug. 29 at noon.
  • LaGuardia Airport has reopened to arrivals and departures.
  • Stewart International Airport will resume flights on Monday, Aug. 29, but travelers should check status with individual carriers.
  • Teterboro Airport has experienced some flooding issues and the Port Authority will announce re-opening plans at this airport when they are finalized.
  • AirTrain JFK and AirTrain EWR are back in service.

Travelers are urged to contact their airlines before coming to the airport to learn about potential delays and cancellations. Additionally, due to limited mass-transit options, arriving and departing passengers should make sure they will be able to get to and from the airports via alternative means if necessary.

Tunnels & Bridges

All bridges and tunnels are now fully open for cash and E-ZPass customers:

Bus Terminals

The Port Authority Bus Terminal and George Washington Bridge Bus Station are open. Many carriers have resumed limited service. Travelers are urged to contact their bus carrier before coming to the bus terminal to learn about potential delays and cancellations. Additionally, due to limited mass-transit options, arriving and departing passengers should make sure they will be able to get to and from the bus terminal via alternative means if necessary.

Ports

APM Terminals, Maher Terminals, Port Newark Container Terminal, and New York Container Terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey will have an 8 a.m. opening on Monday, August 29.

Global Terminal and Red Hook Container Terminal plan to have normal business hours on Monday.
