NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN ALONG HUDSON STREET AND AT CANAL STREET ENTRANCE TO HOLLAND TUNNEL DURING ESSENTIAL WATER MAIN INSTALLATION

The New York City Department of Design and Construction announced traffic pattern changes on Hudson Street and at the Canal Street entrance to the Holland Tunnel that took effect September 19, 2010.

These changes are necessary to install new trunk water mains and reconstruct existing distribution water mains and utility infrastructure along Hudson Street and adjacent streets in the Tribeca West Historic District. A significant element of the project is the construction of a new trunk water main that will be connected to City Water Tunnel No. 3.

Motorists should follow detour signs to reach the tunnel via West Street and Canal Street or may use the Varick and Watts Street approaches. The work hours will be Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and, when necessary, weekend hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The following traffic pattern changes will be in effect through the project's completion in 2015.

Traffic Pattern Changes

  • There will be no access to the Holland Tunnel from Hudson Street (at Canal Street) for the duration of the project.
  • Westbound & Eastbound motorists on Canal Street will still be able to enter the Holland Tunnel.
  • Hudson Street will be narrowed to two lanes within the 3-block construction zone from Franklin Street to Laight Street.
  • Northbound motorists on West Street will be permitted to turn right on to Canal Street to access Holland Tunnel at all times.

Traffic Mitigation Measures

  • No Stopping will be permitted within the construction zone
  • Parking along Hudson Street, within the project limits, will not be allowed
  • Detour and Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be located in and around the project to advise motorists
  • Pedestrian access to buildings and along sidewalks will be maintained at all times
  • Traffic Enforcement Agents will be located at key intersections within the project limits
